Reflection: Business Intelligence Technologies

Walking away from Business Intelligence Technologies (BIT), I feel much more comfortable about the goals I met than I original felt during the final week of the course.

During the final week, the course felt out of sequence. The assignments seemed to dive into an over-arching discussion of BI, the types of problems BI can help solve, and an overall understanding of what BI tools and applications are out there and how they enable each part of the BI mission, such as the ETL process, or visualization and dash board creation.

Looking back, this is exactly what I wanted out of the course and expected to learn!

I still feel this course may be better served as either the initial launching-point of the program or as the 2nd course with EDM as the launching point, but I have come to learn that I accomplished 2 of my 3 goals.

BIT helped strengthen my knowledge and skills in building a business case for senior leadership.

This was practical and general knowledge gained through the assignments and readings that showcased what should be included, what the focused should be on, and how to deliver the message effectively. The most memorable piece of knowledge I will take away will be to stay away from the technical-focused aspects of a plan during the initial business case.

As a technically-focused person, this was difficult to accept; however, during my final assignment it really came forward as a valuable lesson and allowed me to truly sell my point of view effectively and at a level that any person could understand.

I plan to apply what I learned in BIT by continuing to practice the skill of sharing information at the appropriate level to the appropriate audience.
