Reflection: Enterprise Data Management

Looking back at my goals for this course, I can confidently share that I have accomplished 2 of my 3 goals, even though it may not have been through the project strategies.

I have enhanced my ability to communicate technical information in a non-technical manner as I shared my progress in the course with my peers. Outside of the BIMS program, my peers are not familiar with the concepts covered in the EDM course, I was able to practice my comprehension of the weekly subjects as I shared my progress with those around it. I believe being able to explain complex ideas in simple terms shows true mastery and this practice strengthened my understanding of the course and allowed me to enhance an existing skill.

The EDM course also established my understanding of databases, EDM solutions, Big Data, data dimensions, and the data life cycle. Kimball & Ross’ work in The Data Warehouse Toolkit (2013) was instrumental in growing and reinforcing my understanding of this complex topic. They were able to explain an in-depth technical subject in clear terms and illustrate their knowledge in an effective and concise manner.

The EDM course gave me the knowledge to build sound data models for my capstone project. Learning about the data dimensions, modeling, and processes will help me build the models I need to ensure that the data I am analyzing is properly linked, relationed, and that it makes sense for the impact I am seeking to outline. I will continue to use this knowledge throughout the program as I build the capstone product and as I analyze the data assigned through the deliverables in future courses.
