Reflection: Patterns and Recognition

Patterns and Recognition built upon the general ideas presented in the Data Mining course and gave me the opportunity to practice key skills while mining for data, analyzing data, and recognizing patterns in the analysis and visualizations produced during each project.

Patterns and Recognition met my expectations for the course. It tied together multiple key themes throughout the entire program and allowed for the chance to build confidence in essential skills. Patterns and Recognition was the first class to truly require me to mine for data using multiple different sources. These sources did not always present the data in an easy to use and simplified format which led to me using the tenets of data quality and integrity in order to ensure that the data I was analyzing was not junk.

The practice I gained in mining for data, analyzing raw data, and recognizing patterns in the data will help prepare me for both my capstone course and in applying BI fundamentals to any future professional endeavors. Currently, I plan to use these skills in my current role to try and identify core behaviors that could be improved in order to increase operational efficiencies. In an operations role, each small increase could lead to huge improvements during a 11-hour production day. I am excited to see how these concepts and skills can be applied.
